There was an arrest made in La Lune's own motel in the evening which did result in an exchange of gunfire between an armed suspect and two La Lune officers. The suspect, currently held in custody, was wielding a machine gun as well as ordering his dog to attack the entering police officers. It is sad to report in the heat of the moment the dog was shot but it is good to hear that the dog will make a full recovery after receiving emergency care for its injuries. It is also good to report that there was no loss of human life in this incident as the gunman could easily have shot not just the officers but bystanders or even people in the next room over. The police had to act swiftly to prevent further injury or loss of life. The suspect was arrested while on parole for other violent crimes committed within the parish and is awaiting trial on those charges. When asked about the violent crimes within the Parish seeming to become more common, Sheriff Tiernan Juliesse had the following words to offer to the people of the Parish: "Not so much a rise, I'd say, as more blatant and openly out there, as if they feel there will be no consequences for their actions, the crime families. We are making sure there are consequences and will continue to do so. I've hired more deputies and the other Sheriff and myself are doing our damndest to make sure the parish knows that the police force is diligent in keeping it secure." While the shooting of the dog sparked a small, one woman protest it is important to remember the dog was in the act of attacking a law enforcement officer in the commission of their duties and the dog was not killed. It is tragic an animal had to be injured but this question should be asked. "Is it the fault of the officer who shot the dog ordered to attack them or the fault of the person who used the dog as a weapon with willful disregard for its safety and well being." We welcome any thoughts you wish to share on this matter.
